My five business haircut rules
I have been lucky in life to work with some very smart mentors and business professionals. I have worked alongside surgeons, architects, CPAs, attorneys, and learned many things about life and business.
A common trait I observe is their structure in nearly everything they do. This extends beyond their professional lives – it is how they live, in the details.
It could be in their “uniform” that they wear… the consistent choices of clothing, whether it is wearing a black tee shirt all the time, or freshly pressed scrubs, or a consistent selection of clothing that they don’t have to think about every morning, or how they plan their day in blocks of time to get everything on their list done.
Enter the hair…
Professionals deal with a world of high stakes and pressures. They have higher priorities than their hair. They are dealing with decisions and actions which affect people’s lives.
A small number will spend time making sure that it is perfect, yet most just don’t like fighting with their hair every morning. so they throw some pomade in and hope for the best until it gets unbearable for them (their words, not mine).
…which is why I follow the five rules for business haircuts.
Rule # 1: A business haircut is done by appointment at the day and time of the customer’s choosing.
Professionals structure the day so that they can get everything done. Blocks of time are often planned in order to run errands such as getting the car washed and its oil changed, dry cleaning, and other tasks.
An appointment fits into the structure, and allows one to get in and get out at a predictable time so they can get everything done which needs to get done.
Rule # 2: A business haircut should be both simple and easy for the customer to maintain between haircuts.
Keeping a hair style simple gives a business professional one pattern to keep the hair looking consistent day-to-day basis. It must be easy to do, with few or no mental gymnastics. I like to take a moment to walk them through applying any product and combing directions to keep the process easy.
Many of my clients are surprised at how much this cuts down on their day-to-day time and frustrations with their hair.
Rule #3: A business haircut should take less than two minutes to prepare for the day after washing and/or drying – ideally less than one.
If a hairstyle takes longer than that before going to work, most business professionals are not going to style their hair and they will settle for what their hair gives them on that day.
Rule #4: A business haircut tapers so it looks cleaner for a longer period of time.
The most common complaint I hear from business professionals is that their hair is sticking out from their head on the sides and/or it is bothering their ears. Tapering the cut buys him a few more days before their hair starts bothering them.
Rule #5: A business haircut with a hairy neck gets cleaned up between cuts.
Neck hair grows, often more quickly than nape and head hair. Cleaning it up in between haircuts keeps the style looking and feeling fresh and well kept. I tell my business regulars to come see me in two weeks and I will clean up their neck for them. I don’t charge for this… I don’t think someone should have to come out of pocket just because their neck hair grows quickly…
…or as one of my mentors used to say “don’t profit off of somebody else’s misfortune.”
While a business haircut has to have a professional appearance, what truly makes a business haircut is planning a professional’s hair to fit into their day-to-day structure of how they live while supporting their credible image without having to spend ten minutes in front of a mirror.
